This Activity has 3 parts:
Part # 1 Castle
Part # 2 House
Part # 3 - Boat/Canyon
1. Open Photoshop Elements from the the module desktop shortcuts
2. Choose start from Scratch - 
3. Start a new document with these settings

4. Follow these next steps and save your file at the end!!!
Marquee
Tool / Selection Tool
Part 1 - Castle
Selecting an area, Adding and Subtracting from your
selection.
Important Note: For my examples the red box is where you should draw the
marquee tool selection (dancing ants).
Adding
to Selection
1.
Select the Marquee tool (rectangle)

2.
Draw a horizontal rectangle across the bottom
of the page.
Like this:

With
the Marquee tool still selected, click the ‘Add to Selection’ button in the
option toolbar at the top of the page.

4.
Now
add a vertical rectangle to the left of the page. Leave room at the top of the page for more to
be added. Make sure it over laps with the rectangle at the bottom of the page. Notice how the selections add to each other
to create one selection.

Add another vertical rectangle to the right side of the
page. Make sure it over laps with the rectangle at the bottom of the page. Notice
how the selections add to each.
6.
Now
your selection area (with the dancing ants) should look like the letter ‘U’.

Add
3 small rectangles to the top of each vertical rectangle. This should make it look like the top of a
castle.

Subtracting from Selection
Now you will try the ‘Subtract from Selection’.
1. With
the Marquee tool still selected, Click the ‘Subtract from Selection’
button in the option toolbar at the top of the page.
. 
2. Subtract
a door in the front of the castle.

3. Subtract windows from the left & right towers.

Coloring
your selection
1. Click the Paint bucket in the tool bar

2. Choose a color
a. click on set foreground color 
b. choose a color and click o.k. 
3. Click in the middle of your tower to fill it with
color.
4. It should look similar to this:
5. Now Deselect the "Dancing Ants" Press (Ctrl+D) & the ants / selection area will go away
Save your project
This is the First project you are saving:
For ALL of the projects that you create in this module you are expected to:
-Create a folder in the each module folder to keep all of your projects. This is in your (Module Desktop Shortcuts) inside the # Digital Scrapbooking Folder - Use your TechLab #'s for the folder name.
-Save your working project by going to File and Save As and name the activity file (as stated in step 7) and the file type should be a PSD Photoshop File
-Also, Save you file as a picture by going to File and Save As and choose File type JPG and name your file: TechLab # activity # Final
6.
Save this file in the #digital scrapbooking folder
located inside your Module desktop shortcuts Folder (Ex. 14 DigitalScrapbooking)
7.
Use as a file name "(your TechLab number) Your LastName Activity 1-Part 1 Castle" [example. 1945Maguire Activity 1-Part 1 Castle]
Part 2- House
Lasso selection tool, Polygonal Lasso- Adding and
Subtracting from your selection.
1. Start with a new Photoshop document. Same Settings as the top of this activity page..
2. Now
try to create this house using the same ADD & SUBTRACT & COLORING techniques.

3. In
addition to using the Marquee tool, you will need to use other selection
tools.
4. The CIRCLES are created with the Elliptical Marquee tool (found under the rectangular
marquee, click and hold)

5. The TRIANGLES are created with the Polygonal Lasso (found under the Lasso tool, click and hold)
6. Remember
you will still need to use the ‘Add to selection’ and the ‘Subtract from
selection’ buttons, with the Elliptical Marquee and Polygonal Lasso.

Save your project
7.
Save this file in the #digital scrapbooking folder
located inside your Module desktop shortcuts Folder (Ex. 14 DigitalScrapbooking)
8.
Use as a file name "(your TechLab number) Your LastName Activity 1-Part 2 House" [example. 1945Maguire Activity 1-Part 2 House]
Part 3 - Boat/Canyon Merging two pictures- Selecting an area, Adding and Subtracting from your selection.
Open Photoshop and save
- Open Photoshop Elements and do this activity.
- Start with a new Photoshop document. New Settings..
- Use these Settings..

IMPORTANT!!! - When you move or change a picture (it may look fuzzy) you must accept the change you make.
Do this by clicking the Check mark or pressing ENTER on the keyboard.
Also, the ESC will deactivate the dancing ants!
Open background picture
- Open your background picture. In Photoshop Elements- Go to FILE - OPEN - Go to the All Module Folders / Digital Scrapbooking Folder / Tutorial & Activity Files Folder and Open "Activity 1 GrandCanyon" in PhotoShop Elements.
- Note: Information on how to copy a layer from one image to another Click Here Remember to cut is [Ctrl + X]
- Select All [Ctrl + A] to select the entire image
- Copy this picture.[Ctrl + C]
- In the photo bin at the bottom, click back to your main file. - Paste the picture of the GrandCanyon. [Ctrl + V]
- Resize the picture to fill the page (Canvas White Area). For help with resize and reposition photos click here
Open additional picture to edit
- Open the next picture to add to your file.
- Go to the All Module Folders / Digital Scrapbooking Folder / Tutorial & Activity Files Folder and Open "Activity 1 RowBoat" in PhotoShop Elements.
- Select All [Ctrl + A] to select the entire image
- Copy this picture.[Ctrl + C]
- In the photo bin at the bottom, click back to your main file. - Paste the picture of the RowBoat. [Ctrl + V]
- This will paste it in a new layer, on top of the background picture.
- In the Photo Bin on the bottom... click on and close the original RowBoat & GrandCanyon Photos.
Selecting only the Boat
- Click the Lasso tool

- Select the boat by circling the boat as close as you can with the Lasso Tool.
- Remember you must complete the circle with the lasso and connect it back to where you began the circle.

Paste the Boat
- Once you are satisfied with your boat selection and the dancing ants are still moving,
- Copy the boat that you selected by pressing (Copy: Ctrl+C )
- Paste the boat in the same file. (Paste Ctrl+V)
- This will paste it in a new layer, on top of the same location.
- Now you will have 3 layers.
double click on the layer name and rename them to:
- Boat alone
- Boat and Lake
- Grand Canyon
- Turn off the layer of Boat and Lake. Click the eyeball next to the Boat and Lake layer to turn it off.
This will turn off you viewing it, but it will still be there.
- Readjust the size and move the boat to where you want it in the Grand Canyon.

- Save again.
Save your project
- Save this file in the #digital scrapbooking folder
located inside your Module desktop shortcuts Folder (Ex. 14 DigitalScrapbooking)
- Use as a file name "(your TechLab number) Your LastName Activity 1-Part 3 Canyon" [example. 1945Maguire Activity 1-Part 3 Canyon]

FINE TUNING NOTES:
Note: For Fine tuning your Lasso Tool Selection of the Boat...
Now you have to fine tune your selection of the boat. do this in small lasso circles.(this lets you choose undo if you mess up)
- Zoom in on the boat so that the front part of the boat fills the page.
- With the Lasso still selected, use the ‘Add to Selection’ and ‘Subtract from Selection’ to fine tune your selection of the boat.

- Remember you need to use the Lasso in a circle. do this in small lasso circles.(this lets you choose undo if you mess up)
- Keep moving around the entire boat with it zoomed in and continue to fine tune your selection. do this in small lasso circles.(this lets you choose undo if you mess up)
- Deselect the "Dancing Ants" Press (Ctrl+D) & the ants / selection area will go away
